It must be amazing if there is a good way to prolong your hair topper lifespan. The good news is we know lots of methods and techniques that you can adopt to keep your hair topper looking in good condition for longer lifespan. This blog post will focus on how long your human hair topper can typically last and what you can do to extend its lifespan.

The Durability of Hair Toppers

The lifespan of your hair topper can start with where it was produced – make sure to purchase high quality hairpiece from the renown manufacturers. Each hair topper is unique, and their individual durability may vary, but in most cases, you can expect to wear your human hair topper for over 6 to 12 months before you need to replace or repair it.

There are so many factors that can influence a hair topper’s lifespan: the base types, materials, daily lifestyle, attachment, cleaning, and maintenance. If you can take the proper care routine, you will be able to prolong the hair topper’s lifespan significantly.

Hair Type

The hair type may greatly influence your hair topper’s lifespan. Lots of the high-quality customized hair toppers and stock hair toppers are made of lightly-treated quality Remy human hair. With the Remy human hair toppers, the cuticles of all strands are aligned in the same direction, reducing hair tangles and improving the durability of hair toppers. These hairpieces often have the longest lifespan. At UniWigs, all of our human hair toppers are made of 100% Remy Human Hair.

Hair Toppers made of human hair are super versatile too, coming in a diverse variety of textures, densities, colors, and textures.

Hair Topper made of human hair are very versatile as well, coming with the various textures, densities and colors. Please be aware that the hairpieces made of overly processed or poor quality hair may generally have the shortest lifespan.

Hair Topper Maintenance

The regular hair topper maintenance should focus on the regular detangling and cleaning.

The key to keep your hair topper look healthy and natural is to prevent your hair topper from knots and tangles. Each hairpiece may require the special care depending on the hair texture and base type. We also highly recommend you to apply a leave-in hair conditioner to your hair topper so that it can prevent your hair topper from getting dull and worn out.

If your hair topper comes with a lace front or lace base, you should also consider applying the know sealer to your hair topper to prolong the lifespan of the fragile hairpiece knots. The proper hair topper care routine will definitely extend your hair topper’s lifespan as well as keep it look at its best for longer.

Tips and Tricks for Prolonging Hair System Lifespan

Here are these key maintenance tips to keep your hair topper looking its best and prolong its lifespan:

  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase to prevent friction from tangling your hairpiece.
  • Use a high-quality conditioner regularly.
  • Brush your hair topper with a hairpiece-safe brush.

Here are some things to avoid since they may shorten your hair topper’s lifespan:

  • Hairdryers or heated styling tools. You can use the former with the ‘cool’ setting switched on.
  • Alcohol-based gels and sprays.
  • Products that are not specifically designed for hair systems.
  • Sleeping in your hair system without following these recommendations.
  • Using brushes that aren’t designed for hair systems.
  • Swimming without following these recommendations to protect your hair system.

Since human hair is very fragile, even the high quality remy human hair topper will need the regular and careful maintenance to keep it from tangles and shedding. The proper hair topper care procedure combined with getting rid of the damaging bad habits will prolong your hair topper lifespan and keep it looking healthy.

Tips for the newbies to choose the perfect hair toppers!

Hair loss always hurts! What kind of wigs should I buy? What is a topper exactly? If you are new to the wig world, having no ideas about hair toppers, halos, and other wig stuffs Then I guess you’re lucky to be here, I’m here to share some useful tips and answers of the most asked questions.

Firstly let’s make the what a hair topper is clear! What is a hair topper? Literally it’s a hairpiece, we can call it half wig which placed on the top of our heads to cover hair loss areas. Clips are usually used to place them. Also, toppers or hairpieces can usually work semi-permanently, they’re smaller pieces of alternative hair then a wig is. They can specifically work for the area of thin hair by adding volume. A great hair topper will definitely transform your look instantly!

Tip#1 Choose the right type&lace

Please note: Synthetic hair usually can’t be customized to your own hair color&most shiny.
The laces of the toppers can differ from one by one. Let me introduce several most common types. First comes heat defiant hair or you can call it heat-friendly hair. It can be styled with heat like curling irons. The type literally looks very natural! Then synthetic hair fiber is also quite common along the wig users. It is heat defiant too but it is not heat resistant, which means you can roll it on rollers or use a low heat hot air brusher. Human hair lace is the most natural type of all! It can be treated like your own hair. But the cons can be lacking breath ability compared to synthetic type. Also, it costs more than the synthetic hair fiber. The last type I’m gonna tell is human & synthetic blend hair. Please be quite careful with this option since applying heat may cause the synthetic to freeze. Most importantly, make sure you have read the guide book before you have done anything to your topper!

Tip#2 Choose a light density

Density of the topper is measured based on the base of topper and the grams of hair that it has. If you are the new to it, I will advise to try the light density firstly. It will make your look more natural and yourself will also feel more comfortable wearing it.

Tip#3 Measure the right size

Please prepare a tape measure first, then we can measure the area that you want to cover. Doing it from left to right and front to back on the top of your head. Keep this in mind that allow for an extra inch for attaching the clips to your natural hair.

Tip#4 Color decision

What color of toppers should I buy? Please pick the closest color to your bio hair. You can’t go wrong with this principle!

How to Care for Synthetic Hair Topper

Synthetic hair toppers are perfect for you if you wish to add volume to your hair, have thinning hair, or are experiencing hair loss on your crown or someplace else. It’s also practical for adding fullness and length to your hair.

Caring for this hair attachment to elongate its life span is easy if you do it right, and I’m here to put you on the right track. Follow the steps judiciously, and your topper will swing and bounce like it is brand new.

One of the ways to care for your hair topper is by washing it. No, you can’t just wash it like it’s your natural hair. I’ll show you how.

Here’s a list of things you’ll need;
• Wide-tooth comb
• A workspace (basin, bowl, or container)
• Coldwater
• Mild shampoo and conditioner
• Towel
• Wig stand

How to Wash Your Synthetic Hair Topper

1. Detangle synthetic hair topper
Start with gently detangling your synthetic hair topper to avoid pulling the strands out.

2. Get a basin/bowl/container
Place the hairpiece in a basin/bowl/container you can wash it in. Just make sure you have enough room to wash correctly.

3. Rinse the hair topper
Place the hair topper under cold running water and rinse it from the roots to the tips.

4. Wash piece with mild shampoo or sulfate-free shampoo
Smooth some shampoo onto the hair from roots to tips. DO NOT twist or rub it as that can tangle it up and mess with its style.
Put some cold water into the basin/bowl/container, place the hair topper in it, and swish it in the suds it creates.

5. Rinse hair topper again
Run the hairpiece under cold running water and gently rinse from roots to tips until the water runs clear.

6. Get rid of excess water.
Squeeze excess water down the piece. DO NOT wring it.
Hold the hair in your fist and gently squeeze the water from the roots down to the tips. Don’t pull on it. You have to be gentle.

7. Condition the hair
Spread some mild hair conditioner onto your palms and work it into the hair evenly. Smooth the topper out as you do this.
Leave for 15 minutes.

8. Rinse one last time
Thoroughly rinse the conditioner out under cold water.

9. Get rid of excess water once more.
Gently squeeze out excess water. Always remember; DO NOT wring it.

10. Blot out water from hair
Place your washed synthetic hair topper in between a folded towel and apply pressure, so it absorbs excess water. This works well in place of wringing as it’s safer for your hair and you retain its style. DO NOT wring or twist.

11. Hang hair up
Place damp hair on a wig stand to hang and part to the desired position with a tail comb.

12. Let hair air dry
Air drying synthetic hair is much faster than a human hair. It takes at most three hours to dry completely.

13. Style hair topper
Once it’s dry, you can style the hairpiece.
Check the instructions your wig came in and adhere to the heating and styling rules stated. For some, the maximum temperature for styling synthetic hair toppers is 180F unless it’s stated by the manufacturers that you can apply more heat.
Applying too much heat while styling might lead to melting of the hair as it’s synthetic and that’s some severe irreparable damage you don’t want.

Styling Your Synthetic Hair Topper

If you feel the need to alter the style in which your topper came, I would advise you to take it to a professional hairstylist. Attempting to make modifications to the hairpiece on your own is terrible for your hair’s shelf life.
A professional will make the changes you want without causing damage to your hairpiece.

Do’s and Don’ts of Synthetic Hair Topper Care

Do’s
Some maintenance tips include:
Wash your hair topper every two weeks or whenever it’s getting visibly dirty, depending on how often and how long you wear it at a time.

• While washing your hairpiece, make sure you’re doing it in a downward motion in the direction the hair falls to.

• Water used to wash it rinse synthetic hair should always be cold. Hot water can permanently damage the hair.

• When not in use, hang on a wig stand and cover it up with a hairnet, so dust doesn’t settle on it.
For short-term storage, please keep it in the box it came in. For long-term storage, please keep it in your closet.

• Use products suited for synthetic hair topper use only.

• Apply some leave-in conditioner now and then to hydrate your hairpiece.

• Take care of your hair underneath it to prevent grease, dirt or product buildup from taking a toll on your topper.

Don’ts

• Don’t wash it too often. Take care of your topper but don’t wash it every chance you get. Doing this will shorten your hair’s lifespan.

• Don’t apply oil to your topper as this could wreak some havoc on the hair. It’ll get clumped up and tangled and might begin to look somewhat ratty and challenging to manage.
Also, it will degrade the synthetic strands over time.

• Don’t shower with it. Seriously, just don’t.

• Don’t comb or style it when it’s wet. You could also damage it if you do and you don’t want that. If you care enough about your topper, that is.

• Don’t expose it to heat, especially when it’s extreme. It could cause severe fiber damage and make your hair frizzy.

• As tempting as going to bed with your topper on might seem, don’t do it. You run the risk of matting and breaking your synthetic hair, and it’s more awful to see than your usual bedhead.

• Don’t go swimming with your hairpiece. Pools have chlorine, and synthetic hair doesn’t do so well with chemicals. Give your topper a fair chance at life and remove it before going for a dive.
There you have it; a complete guide to caring for and maintaining your synthetic hair topper to retain its sway and luster.

Suggestions For Bald Patches Where The Clips Go

We got feedback recently like that:

“I’ve been wearing toppers for two years now, and this is my current and absolute favorite, Melanie in chocolate caramel! She is the 20”, but is probably closer to 17 or 18 as I had her trimmed.

I have a question I am hoping someone can help with: I wear my topper every day, so I have small almost bald patches where the clips go. I totally accept this as part of the whole picture. However, those spots get very dry and irritated! Almost like a baby getting cradle cap. Has anyone else experienced this? Suggestions on how to treat it best?” -from one of our customers.

For sensitive scalp, if we place the clips in the same place every day, that would be caused that problem. So here’re some suggestions

Way to pull it off

Loose your hair from the clips one by one will cause baldness. Because when you open one clip and loose the hair, the other clips on your head will be stretched. So it’s better to open all clips when you are ready to take off your hair topper. Please take note of the turn you open the clips. Usually, we suggest to loose the back clips, then loose the side clips, the last ones are the front clips. Let the hair smoothly slides from the combs of the clips.

Wear a topper with a top grip

It’s getting more popular to wear a wig grip with a wig recently. So there’re also have top grip for hair toppers. UniWigs will have that top grips soon. If you want to use it urgently, just google and purchase from other vendors firstly.

The method of applying the top grip is similar to the wig grip. If you use top grips, you don’t have to clip the topper on your hair. Just apply the top grip on your head, then clip the topper on the wig grip. The top grip is usually made of velvet or other comfortable materials, that would be much more skin-friendly.

Buy a wig

For the new users, it’s not easy to handle the top grip and you would feel it’s not working for you. If you have a very sensitive scalp, wearing a wig is not a bad choice.

It helps to give your scalp a break if it is sensitive.

Use G2B

If you have a spot area, especially the thinning hairline, we suggest using glue the hair topper with a lace front. (You can purchase G2B at UniWigs) . By using the G2B glued the lace down to aid in better hold and to take the pressure off of the clips sites. Since we suggest customers use this way to lay down their hair topper on their heads, some of our customers said they can no longer wear their topper without the G2B glued and they never have to worry about it staying put-even on roller coasters.

To buy a topper with fewer clips

For some customers who like hair toppers, they insist to wear hair toppers instead of wigs for daily life. Except for the top grip, we designed a new hair topper base as below:

There’re five clips on the hair topper originally. Now it’s only 2 small clips, 2 combs, and a silicone strap. Most customers who choose the 10”x10” base sizes are with advanced hair loss. The comb will be more comfortable and sensitive to the scalp. Silicon strap fits around our head for extra security and will lay the front lace flat.

Highlights- The New Balayage Hair Topper

If you have brown hair, a fabulous set of warm blonde hightlights is just what you need to bring it to life. There are several brown color hair toppers hightlighted with blondes at UniWigs. Different color tones has different look. Today , we are going to introduce the new one: T-414 Rooted Mocha.

T-414 is just the name code for UniWigs producing. The color named Rooted Mocha will be visualized by a fine-quality mocha coffee. It’s Medium Brown and Light Brown Blend with Blonde highlights and Medium Brown Roots.

The length of roots is about 4-5 inches. Why we need this long roots? Usually we prefer 1-2 inches dark roots on hair toppers. Lots of people have 1-2” shadow root with their own hair. If you go to hair salon, the roots will be longer. We imagine when people wear UniWigs hair topper, not only they wear a hair topper, but also feel like dying a new hair from hair salon. We wish we could offer a fresh positive mood for our customers.

From UniWigs’ Claire Collection, “Upgrade Claire Plus” is the biggest base size. 6.5”x6.5” will cover your hair loss are 4 x4 inches. You can select the hair length 12”, 14” and 16”. It’s for people at the stage of advanced hair loss. Of couse, you can purchase it if you just have thinning hair. The lace front big mono base hair topper is perfect for people with thinning hairline. You can use halo-wire to lay the front lace flat or you can glue it down. Unlike the synthetic hair topper, you can make some curl patterns so you can change your hair style in different hair texture.

HOW TO CUT OR TRIM YOUR HAIRPIECES AT HOME

The beauty of hair pieces (extensions and toppers) is in their ability to blend not only with your natural hair color and density but also your hair length. Making sure your hairpieces blend with your natural hair length will make it look more natural and undetectable.

Sometimes, hairpieces come too long or wispy at the ends, which makes them look detectable when there are worn. Cutting or trimming your hair extensions and toppers allows you to customize them exactly to your wants and needs and also enables them to blend better into your own hair.

Usually, we would recommend that you take your hairpieces to a professional stylist to trim, but we are aware that that’s presently almost impossible due to the current pandemic. Therefore, we have developed this article that explains how you can cut or trim your hairpieces by yourself, right in your comfort of your home.

To start, you should ensure that you:

  1. Have sharp hair cutting scissors. Using blunt or kitchen scissors (or any other kind) can cause breakage and split ends.
  2. Make sure that your hair extension or topper is clean and dry. A wet hair extension or topper will prevent the hair scissors from trimming steadily and accurately.
  3. Put your extension or topper where they will normally go.
  4. Have a mirror large enough to see your full hair length with your hairpieces.
  5. For extensions, you can level them. You can use a Sharpie or number the clips.
  6. Blend your extensions or topper into your hair by straightening your hair with your hairpiece already in place.

Trimming Your Hairpieces

For Hair Extensions

  1. First, you should decide how much length (if any) you are going to take off. Then, you should also decide if you want a blunt cut, a ‘V’ cut, or a straight, natural cut.
  2. Split your hair down the centre and bring the sections to the front.
  3. Working on one side, using your fingers and a comb, gather your hair and trim or cut desired length. Use your fingers to guide the cut.
  4. Repeat the same action on the other side.

Make sure you sure a sharp hair cutting scissors and trim in front of a mirror where you can see your hair length with the extension.

  1. To blend the extension to your hair, feather cut or point cut by cutting into the ends at an angle.

Check to see if everything is even by re-straightening your hair.

For face framing layers

Separate the front sections of your hair. Use your ears as guide. Section away the hair behind your ears. Then, razor cut into the front section, just below your natural hair length to blend together. You can also use a sharp razor blade is this case to give fine slant trims. But be careful not to cut yourself with it.

For Toppers

When trimming your topper, straighten your entire hair by combing them down, after you’ve installed the topper onto your hair. Using your fingers and comb, gather a section of your hair and measure out the length of your natural hair. Then with a pair of sharp hair scissors, trim off additional lengths from the topper as desired (more ideally, a quarter of an inch longer than your natural hair) . Repeat the same action all round to achieve a more blended result.

You can also part your hair down the middle and bring the sections to the front, to enable you trim them adequately. Do not forget to also chop in after cutting, to make it look less blunt and more natural.

With the above tips, you should be able to trim your hairpieces confidently. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, you can ask a relative or anyone with you to help you.

Finally, you should ensure to take your time when trimming your hair pieces, especially if you’re not yet used to doing it yourself.

Also everything I have tried in my price range looks like a wig and needs a lot of finessing only to have them irritate, itch, and just be really uncomfortable for everyday wear. So I saved up for this human hair piece.
Amber topper is comfortable to wear and blended in pretty well. The Hair density is medium, not too thick and not too thin. Curls and straightens pretty well. Minimal shedding and tangling. I like this hair topper very much, best one I have tried so far. I will be purchasing back ups.”
