Basis Types

Wigs are divided into two main parts: the base and the hair. The base can consist of different materials and even combinations of them. There are more resistant materials, others less visible, some easy to clean and others breathable.

For example: if you live in a hot and muggy region, or if you go towards the summer, it is better to buy a wig with a breathable fabric that freshness to your scalp. Lace

Monofilament

Monofilament is a fabric similar to lace, also completely breathable, but more resistant, therefore thicker and consequently less imperceptible. It usually lasts between four and six months, but some customers manage to wear it for almost a year! Here are the main types:

The resistant monofilament (fine welded mono) is certainly the most resistant material and therefore can support high hair densities.
The fine monofilament (fine mono) is certainly the most used material in the wig and hair prosthesis industry and also one of the most chosen among customers because it is a good compromise between imperceptibility and resistance. It is mainly used for the central areas of wigs and is enclosed in a perimeter of PU (polyurethane) to prevent it from falling apart at the edges.
The very fine monofilament (superfine mono) is the most delicate and soft, with smaller holes than the other two types. Due to this characteristic, it is not compatible with hair densities higher than medium-light / medium.
Monofilament silk effect (silk mono): this fabric consists of a combination of two fabrics: lace and monofilament. The hair is knotted first in a layer of lace and then passed into a layer of monofilament. In this way, it is impossible to see the knot, because it remains under the top layer of the monofilament.
German mesh: recommended for those who prefer durability to a natural look. It is indeed the most resistant material, but it is thicker and therefore more visible.

Skin

This material is the most advanced. It is PU (polyurethane, a plastic material) of different thicknesses and is called ‘skin’ in English because the effect is leather-like. These products are absolutely imperceptible and very easy to apply to the skin and clean. Unlike the other materials seen so far, they are not breathable. Let’s see the most important ones:

The ultra-thin has a thickness of 0.03 mm. Which makes it completely invisible, but at the same time not very resistant. It usually lasts for a maximum of 2 months.

There is also a type of film a little more resistant than those mentioned above, which is the film with gauze. It is characterized by a gauze-like fabric to which a layer of PU is applied. The super-thin is instead of 0.08 mm. Thicker, therefore more resistant. Finally, the silicone is 0.25mm thick. It is a very common material and is the strongest of all leather-like products.

Synthetic wigs need to be maintained with the correct synthetic haircare, and they shouldn’t be treated or maintained like human hair wigs.

1. Synthetic wigs can’t take the dye
Synthetic fiber can’t easily take dye like human hair. As synthetic hair does not have natural pigments in the fiber, regular hair dye cannot color the fiber. To dye a synthetic wig, only dyes specially designed for synthetic hair can be used.

2. Cut carefully
The good news is that synthetic wigs can be cut. Although synthetic fiber is harder than human hair, and so it is more difficult to cut. To trim your synthetic wig or change its style, it’s recommended to go to a professional stylist.

3. Ditch the hair products
Too many hair products, specifically hair lacquer-based products such as hairspray, hair gel, and hair wax can make synthetic fiber sticky, resulting in more frequent tangles. Once these hair lacquer products get on synthetic fiber, it’s difficult to get them off.

4. Go for synthetic-friendly shampoos and conditioners
As synthetic fiber is not like human hair, they need special shampoos and conditioners designed for synthetic fiber to wash and maintain. And for haircare, non-oily maintenance products are recommended to maintain the hair rather than regular hair oil or serum.

5. Not all synthetic fibers are heat friendly
Although they are all called synthetic wigs, there are several different types of synthetic wigs. There are many different synthetic fibers made from different materials that are used on different synthetic wigs. Some synthetic fibers, such as Futura, Tru2Life, RealTress, and Henlong are heat-friendly to temperatures under 350°F/180°C. In contrast, synthetic fibers such as polyester, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylic, and Kanekalon are not heat-friendly and can’t be curled or straightened with heat tools.

6. Wash correctly
The less washing, the better for synthetic wigs. It is recommended to wash a synthetic wig every 10-15 wears or every 1-4 weeks. Go for synthetic shampoos and conditioners and use lukewarm water to soak the wig for 2-3 minutes with shampoo before washing. After washing, do not rub or wring the wig. Instead, gently squeeze the water out and blot dry.

7. Air dry
Like mentioned before, synthetic fiber is not like human hair. Some synthetic wigs are not able to be styled with heat. Frequently using hair dryers also makes synthetic wigs more likely to become frizzy or tangled. So, the best way to dry synthetic wigs is to air dry them on a wig stand (not wig heads as they can cause the cap to loosen out of shape).

How to Care for Synthetic Hair Topper

One of the ways to care for your hair topper is by washing it. No, you can’t just wash it like it’s your natural hair. I’ll show you how.

Here’s a list of things you’ll need;
• Wide-tooth comb
• A workspace (basin, bowl, or container)
• Coldwater
• Mild shampoo and conditioner
• Towel
• Wig stand

How to Wash Your Synthetic Hair Topper

1. Detangle synthetic hair topper
Start with gently detangling your synthetic hair topper to avoid pulling the strands out.

2. Get a basin/bowl/container
Place the hairpiece in a basin/bowl/container you can wash it in. Just make sure you have enough room to wash correctly.

3. Rinse the hair topper

6. Get rid of excess water.
Squeeze excess water down the piece. DO NOT wring it.
Hold the hair in your fist and gently squeeze the water from the roots down to the tips. Don’t pull on it. You have to be gentle.

7. Condition the hair
Spread some mild hair conditioner onto your palms and work it into the hair evenly. Smooth the topper out as you do this.
Leave for 15 minutes.

8. Rinse one last time
Thoroughly rinse the conditioner out under cold water.

9. Get rid of excess water once more.
Gently squeeze out excess water. Always remember; DO NOT wring it.

10. Blot out water from hair
Place your washed synthetic hair topper in between a folded towel and apply pressure, so it absorbs excess water. This works well in place of wringing as it’s safer for your hair and you retain its style. DO NOT wring or twist.

11. Hang hair up
Place damp hair on a wig stand to hang and part to the desired position with a tail comb.

12. Let hair air dry
Air drying synthetic hair is much faster than a human hair. It takes at most three hours to dry completely.

To avoid your wig get tangled and matted, we need to learn the proper way to wash your human hair pieces.

Here are five easy steps to follow to wash your alternative human hair pieces properly:

1. Detangle
To prevent shedding, comb hair starting from the ends.

2. Rinse
Use cold/lukewarm water and rinse from root to ends.

3. Shampoo
Massage product in hand to loosen shampoo, and then massage shampoo on the cap in circular motions. After that, use cold/lukewarm and rinse from root to ends, and then squeeze toe remove excess water. Please DO NOT wring the hair.

4. Condition
