I want to purchase a topper, but where should I start?

Many people want to purchase a topper but have no clue at all about how to choose one and which kind of topper will fit them best. By asking yourself these questions it will help you get somewhere step by step.

1. What is the purpose of buying a topper? Is it just for adding hair volume or to cover the hair thinning area?
To add hair volume, you have many choices about the size. Usually a small size like 5×5 or 5.5×5.5 can provide enough coverage with no problem.
To cover the hair thinning area, you need to measure your own cap size first. Is it 5×5, 6×6, 6×7, 8×9 or even bigger? After knowing your cap size, you can narrow your choices to a few specific hair topper options.

2. What kind of base do you like?
Usually there are 3 kinds of bases on the market, and they are Lace base, Monofilament base and Silk top base.
Monofilament base allows a smooth skin base top that resembles your own natural scalp. A mono-top mimics the look of natural hair growth and provides hair parting for the greatest versatility in styling.

This is another great choice if you want to ensure that the front hairline simulates your own. It is very light-weight and breathable which is perfect for hot days!

lace base

This is the most realistic scalp the market has to offer today. It perfectly hides the knots and you don’t need to worry about any other techniques to make the knots invisible or less visible.

silk top base

Silk top base has three layers of bases to create the most natural hairline. Thus it requires a certain technique to make it lay flat on the head and look natural on you. It is not recommended that beginners choose a silk top base. On the other hand, lace base is most breathable and easy to fit the head shape. However, you need glue to secure it in the front, hence it is also not the best option for beginners. All in all, Monofilament base might be a good choice for beginners.

3. What hair material do you like? Human hair or Synthetic fiber?
Human hair is just like your own hair and it is the choice of 90% customers. For human hair, you also can dye it, flatten it, and curl it. However, synthetic fiber is more economic.

4. What texture do you like?
You can choose the texture that you like. It has many options like natural straight, body wave, loose wave, curl, etc.

5. What color do you choose?
Not like a full wig, a slight difference of the color will not matter. For a topper, you need to pick a color that will exactly match with your own bio hair and this fact makes this step the most difficult one. First you can pick one or two close colors and compare them with your bio hair color by checking the photos on the website. The reviews and the pictures that customers posted. If you still cannot verify the color, you can contact their customer service desk to ask for some pictures of the hair sample and actual hair color to get more references.

6. What length do you like?
You can get a visual idea about what length you need through below picture.

7. What density do you need?
Usually 130% density can satisfy the needs of 90% of the customers. However, some people prefer really lush and full hair volume. In that case, then 150% or 180% can be your choices.

After answering all these questions step by step, you can get a clear idea what hair toppers will fit you the best.

The number 1 question that customers ask about Toppers

As newcomers to hair toppers, there are many things that we would like to know and many things we should be aware of. Here is the number one question that UniWigs’ customers usually ask about hair toppers.

Number 1:
I have been suffering from hair loss for years now, so how can I choose the right topper for myself?

This question has been frequently asked because most customers are new to this product. They never realized that there is a product which can be meant specially for them except for the wigs and extensions. So, how can you choose a perfect topper? What should you know before making the decision?

1.You have to know how severe your hair loss is.
 If you only have a thinning parting line, or you don’t have any serious hair loss at all and just want to add to your hair volume, congratulations! You have plenty of options at the base size and construction. Toppers are designed not only for those who are hair loss sufferers, but also for those who would like to have a better volume or a perfect hairstyle for occasions such as weddings or parties.
However, if you do suffer from major hair loss, your choice of toppers would be limited to only larger base toppers. And the size of the topper depends on the degree of your hair loss, so how can you determine it? Please check out this video which may help you out,

2. In addition to determining the base size, you should know which type of construction would be the best-suited to your needs.

Let’s take UniWigs for example. There are a wide variety of base construction options such as silk top, mono topper and lace topper. So, what’s the difference between these various types?

Normally, all of them share the function of completely and effectively covering up the hair loss area.
The silk top has the best invisible base which is just like our own scalp. However, it is extremely thick and will prove to be sweaty as well.
The mono topper is familiar to us because it has been used as the wig of choice for cancer patients It is softer than a silk top and has a good parting line.
The lace topper, which has the best price in 3 of them, has a front lace that has to be trimmed. Because of this, it is not usually the first option or the beginner.

3.Choosing the right color.
After determining the base size and base construction, we come to the hair color.

Hair color is the most important factor to consider for hair toppers because we have to make sure it matches the color of our natural hair, or it has the perfect style which can match our face frame and skin tone.
If you are not sure about the way to choose the hair color, there are 2 methods to solve it.
1. By sending a hair sample to them. This would be the easiest way, but it takes a longer time.
2. By ordering a color ring from their website. Then you can return the color ring to them after placing the order for a full refund.

https://www.uniwigs.com/care-products/41120-color-chart-human-hair-extension.html
3. By choosing a natural black topper and getting it dyed. Please be aware that only the natural black can be bleached, and that all of the other colors can only be dyed into darker tone.
4. By making a custom order. You also can send them a picture with the color that you would love to make, and they will quote the price for you. However, the custom-made product cannot be returned, so you have to make sure before ordering.

4 . How to choose the right length
For the straight item, you can choose the length according to the picture shown below:

For the wavy topper the hair length should be measured from the hair root to the hair bottom when the hair is set straight. The curly and wavy wigs have been produced from straight wigs, so for the same length, a curly or wavy wig will be shorter by 1″-2″ than the straight wig.
*It varies depending on how deep the curl is.

After confirming all of the above, you can have a better idea about which hair topper is the one that’s ideal for you. Please be aware that sometimes everything is perfect with the topper, except for the fact that it doesn’t fit you properly. Because of this unfortunate fact, UniWigs is now planning for an offline store, which would be a good development for those who are new to toppers.

WIG CAP CONSTRUCTIONS

To choose a wig is to choose a lifestyle. When you look at a wig, you are not only looking at the hairs attached, you want to understand how they are made, with what kind of magic technologies can those hairs look so real. Here at UniWigs, we offer the highest quality wig products. We also make every effort to be informative and considerate. This is a detailed catalogue for our customers to understand what type of foundations (also referred to as caps) our wigs are attached to. Based on different materials used on a cap, we divide our wig constructions into the following categories. It is common to combine more than one material on a single cap.

BASIC CAPS

Historically, a wig is used for adding the volume of hair or to disguise baldness. For a long period of time, the foundation of a wig is made of net or mesh with hair wefts1 sewn on it. This is the oldest and most economic way to manufacture a wig. Therefore such wigs are the most durable and affordable.

Traditional
1. Summary: The most classic cap, added a net layer to the crown in order to maintain the shape of the wig.
2. Material: Flower net front, ultra-thin wefts, memory mesh base.
3. Crafts: Open wefts sewn on cap base, with a net layer overlapping the crown.
4. Features: Durable, stable, affordable.

Capless
1. Summary: It is called capless because it’s super light weight, almost undetectable.
2. Material: Memory mesh, ultra-thin wefts.
3. Crafts: Ultra thin wefts sewn on memory mesh, with open space in between the wefts.
4. Features: Lighter weight, airy, affordable.

Hand-tied Caps

As time goes by, classic weft-sewn wigs no longer meet wig wearers’ needs. They seek for more comfort and more natural looking. That’s where hand-tied2(also refers to as hand-knotted) caps come to sight. This type of cap involves a great amount of manpower hours, yet it offers a highly natural look, lighter weight, and super comfort.

Depending on different materials hairs are hand-knotted into, there are three types of construction fabrics used on UniWigs products: lace, monofilament, and silk. Each approach has its own features and meets various needs. And they are usually combined with each other or other materials due to high manpower demands and cost, such as wefts or stretchy mesh.

Lace base snuggles with scalp perfectly, it is soft, breathable, and can be freely combined with any other materials. Soft , snuggly, breathable, free parting, different colors available. 3-4 strands of hair knotted at each cross.
Monofilament: Parting in any directions desired, the base is invisible, natural-looking. Fixed shape, perfectly fit the shape of your crown, natural looking, free parting, transparent skin tone available. 1-2 strands of hair knotted at each cross.
Silk: Our highest end cap structure, most complicated crafts and looks most natural among all product lines, invisible knots, looks just like your own skin. Just like each strand of bio hair growing from your own scalp.

Note 1: To weave the root ends of the hair onto a warp of three silk threads to form a sort of fringe called a “weft”. The wefts are then sewn to a foundation made of net or other material.
Note 2: It is a fine handmade craft where artists use a small hook, which is called a “ventilating needle”, to knot a few strands of hair at a time directly to a suitable foundation material.
Note 3: Monofilament(refers to as mono hereinafter) is a type of fabric that is widely used in textile industry. For a wig construction usage, it is knitted into a mesh that is more delicate and more comfortable than lace closure when applied to scalp.

Glue or Glueless
When we put on a wig, it is expected that the wig WILL securely stay in place. No moving around, no falling off. We do not want to encounter any of those awkward moments where our little secret is revealed. For this purpose, skin-safe adhesives or hair pins are the easiest options. We also offer more efficient options with none or less adhesive. With our uniquely designed, tight and invisible combs and clips sewn on temples and back, and adjustable straps fastened around nape, you can keep a peaceful mind that your wig will always stay where it is.
